Year 5 Discover More: Bathurst Camp and a Taste of Senior School
Our Year 5 students have recently enjoyed two outstanding experiences that combined hands-on learning, new friendships and a glimpse into the future. These are our annual Bathurst Camp and our engaging Year 5 Taster Day.
Year 5 Camp to Bathurst
The Year 5 camp to Bathurst was a memorable journey into Australia’s rich history, science and discovery. Students embraced every opportunity to learn through experience and exploration. Special thanks go to Mr Mitas, Mr Przydacz, Mr Elliot, Mrs Worthington, Mrs Findley and Mrs Gillies who joined me on this trip.
We started the time in Bathurst by the visiting the Fossil and Mineral Museum, where students marvelled at impressive displays and deepened their understanding of Earth’s history. The excitement continued as they tried their hand at gold panning, discovering firsthand the challenges and rewards of prospecting during Australia’s gold rush era.
The camp also provided wonderful opportunities for practical, collaborative learning. Students worked together to make mud bricks, gaining insight into early construction techniques, and explored how steam power was harnessed in the past to drive machinery and industry.
One of the most captivating experiences was watching a skilled blacksmith in action, using traditional 1880s tools such as a forge and bellows to shape metal into a fire poker. This demonstration brought history to life and showcased the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Students learned to cook damper over an open fire and heard stories of bushrangers and daily life in the 1800’s.
Our evening around the campfire was fun. Students enjoyed roasting marshmallows but it was nice to return to warm cabins for the night!
Overall, the camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world experiences, while building independence and resilience.
Taster Day
Earlier last week, our Year 5 Taster Day was another highlight, offering students a glimpse into life in the Senior School. This day brought together our current Year 5 students and those considering joining the College in Year 7, 2028, fostering new connections and a sense of belonging.
Students were warmly welcomed and supported by our dedicated Senior School teachers and student leaders, who guided them through a range of engaging activities in small groups.
The day provided a vibrant snapshot of the wide range of learning opportunities available in Year 7. Students enthusiastically participated in lessons across a variety of subject areas, including:
- Visual Arts
- Food Technology
- Science
- English
- Mathematics
- Physical Education
- Technology
Each session was designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity and build confidence, giving students a true “taste” of the exciting journey that lies ahead in their secondary education.
Both the Bathurst Camp and the Taster Day exemplify our commitment to providing meaningful, enriching experiences that support each student’s growth — academically, socially and personally.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 students for the enthusiasm, curiosity and positive spirit they demonstrated throughout both events. These experiences not only created lasting memories but also strengthened their readiness for the next stage of their learning journey.
God bless,

Junior School & Senior School CSSA Soccer Gala Day
On Monday, our Junior School and Senior School girls attended the CSSA Soccer Gala Day, where students demonstrated excellent resilience and sportsmanship throughout the day despite some challenging wet weather conditions early on. It was wonderful to see students encouraging one another, competing with enthusiasm, and representing the College with pride across all matches.
A special congratulations to our Junior School girls team, who finished an outstanding second place out of six teams. The girls competed exceptionally well throughout the day and should be very proud of their effort, teamwork, and determination. Well done to all students involved for the positive way they represented Oran Park Anglican College.
College Sport
Our College Sport program continues to provide students with valuable opportunities to learn, develop skills, and enjoy a wide range of sporting experiences. This term, students have been participating in AUSISO (Australian International Sports Organisation) sessions, including American Football and Basketball. It has been fantastic to see students building confidence, learning new skills, working collaboratively with their peers, and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship throughout these activities.
